Drugs/alcohol and your mental health

This section consists of information designed to help service users

David

Martha

Martha knows the ‘dark’ and ‘bright’ side of ecstasy (and other drugs) and this comes through in a story that shows how people have to adapt their lives to the distress and stigma of mental illness

Jason

Jason will use anything as long as it makes him feel ‘normal’.

He hears and sees things, gets bizarre ideas and simply keeps using drink and drugs to get through it all.

God

‘God’ has lived on the streets for years. His life is like ‘heaven and hell’, speedballing or drinking and being in hospital.

Off your head guides

Alarmed by the lack of guidance for service users with a ‘dual diagnosis’, consultant nurse Mark Holland teamed up with colleagues in Manchester to plug the gap. You can read these by clicking on the black buttons below.

The series of four booklets, updated in 2014, tell the stories of David, Martha, ‘God’ and Jason. They are based on the experiences of people who use substances and are in mental health treatment. The booklets provide useful information for service users, carers and professionals in a format that is easy to read, amusing at times, sympathetic and factual.

They were developed by Manchester Mental Health And Social Care Trust, Lifeline Publications and the University of Salford and featured Progress. They also have formed the basis of an e-learning programme accessible to practitioners, service users and carers. It was developed by embrace-learning who are experienced in devising and delivering health and social care e-learning courses. For more details, Click here.
